Gordes faces the spectacular Luberon mountains and is known as one of the most beautiful villages in France. It is one of the most sought after places to visit in Provence.
Dominated by its superb medieval castle and the Saint-Firmin church, characterised by its peasant past as well as the splendours of sixteenth century nobility, it’s easy to lose yourself in the cobbled alleyways that wind between the towering houses made from dry stone. These have been hollowed out of the rocks and cling to the sides of the cliff face. This is when you’ll take on board and understand the thousands of stories and legends from this unique village. Marc Chagall, Victor Vasarely, André Lhote, Pol Mara, and so many other artists could not be wrong when they made Gordes their chosen spot and source of inspiration in the post-war years.
A walk along the narrow streets among the many art galleries proves that this charm is alive and well today and that Gordes has lost nothing of its authenticity. Staying in Gordes gives you the chance to embrace the magic and poetry of a region that’s full of traditions. You’ll find the Luberon located between the Alpes de Haute Provence and the Vaucluse plain.
A short distance away from the citadel village of Gordes, lulled by the scents of native plants, you’ll find the bories village, which is a collection of traditional circular constructions that used to be places for shepherds and peasants to take shelter.
A little further on, marvel at one of the jewels of Cistercian architecture by visiting the Abbaye de Sénanque, dating back to the 12th century and nestled in a small valley surrounded by lavender fields. Set off to explore the spectacular Ocres du Luberon landscape or the internationally renowned antique dealers at L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue. There again, maybe you’d prefer to stride out amongst the stalls in of one of the numerous Provencal regional markets…
The Luberon is waiting for you to explore, whether you’re on foot, on a bike or in a vintage 2CV. You can ask us for advice, we will be delighted to help you explore a land that we love so much and whose charm is matched only by its authenticity.
